Green Hotel in Playa Del Carmen

On my recent trip to Playa Del Carmen I stayed at the Hacienda Real Del Caribe Hotel. It was my first trip to Mexico, so I was a little nervous about the accommodations we had chosen.

I was a little confused when I entered my room and could not figure out how to turn on any of the lights, or the air conditioner. It turns out that this hotel is leading the way in energy conservation. The a/c, lights, and television would not function without the key card being inserted into a slot that was located close to the entrance. This ensured that a room must be occupied to be functioning full force.

I was so intrigued by this technology that I did some research when I returned to the United States and found an interesting article in The Japan Times titled Green Key inns are all eco-stars. Mentioned in the article is the Green Key certification for hotels that originated in Denmark. This Green Key certification is backed officially by the Foundation of Environmental Education.

The Green Key certification site for the US and Canada allows Hotels to seek the certification which awards them with a score of 1-5. This is independent of the Greek Key certification backed by the Foundation of Environmental Education. Going forward, I will make a conscious effort to patronize hotels that are making an effort to reduce the carbon footprint they are leaving behind.
